Let’s get right to it.
#1. Built-in Motivation
Starting an exercise routine is hard.
Maintaining an exercise routine is even harder.
Why?
If you are exercising to lose weight, for example, there are many factors that go into weight loss beyond just exercise.
Because of this, progress can be slow if there is any progress at all.
And for most of us, when we exercise, we want to see a physical transformation.
And we want it now!
If we don’t see that transformation, motivation can become depleted and we may find other things to do with our time.
But when it comes to resistance training, things are different.
When you consistently train with weights or your own body weight, the changes that take place in your body, whether you lose weight or not, are quite visible.
Muscles grow. Your shape improves. Your body literally changes right before your eyes.
And when your eyes behold this, motivation builds and this beautiful cycle continues.
Discipline > change > motivation > discipline > on and on it goes…
Sure, you may not see those changes on day one or day two, but when you train consistently you will start to see changes fairly quickly, and those changes continue to increase over time.
So if you start a weight training program, be sure to be disciplined.
Discipline is your key and you have it within you, whether you realize it or not.
You might be shocked to learn of all the areas in your life where you exhibit an almost other-worldly level of discipline.
Think about it.
So even though you may not always feel like it, but get those workouts in. Then check out the mirror at home and enjoy the fruits of your labors.
Remember: discipline > change > motivation > discipline > on and on it goes…
#2. Mindset
Lifting weights is a physical challenge, whether you use dumbbells, barbells, or your own body weight.
Your are forced to push through resistance in a way other forms of exercise sometimes force you to do, but not always.
Whether you find resistance training fun or not, that challenge to push through resistance is ALWAYS there.
And that has to have an effect on your mind.
Pushing through resistance and being successful wires your mind in a wonderful way.
And when you push through resistance with weight, suddenly your mind is wired to recognize you as not only physically strong, but mentally strong.
You persevere. You don’t give up. You don’t let resistance stand in your way. When you see it, you push through it.
That becomes who you are because it is literally what you do.
It is virtually impossible to engage in an activity that requires you to defeat resistance, see positive results, be motivated to continue defeating resistance, and not have a mental carryover effect.
Although it is not a cure-all nor panacea for mental wellness issues, resistance training is one of the easiest ways to impact your mental fortitude. Further mental growth becomes much easier (and more desirable) if you have begun building a foundation.
#3. Live Longer!
Yes, you read that right.
Scientific research has found resistance training to have mortality-reducing and anti-aging effects.
You can read more about my analysis of a study done which has shown this effect here and about its anti-aging effects here.
So, let’s recap:
Resistance training can make you look better physically.
Resistance training can make you feel better mentally.
And resistance training can make you live longer.
The reasons to resist resistance training seem to be shrinking, don’t they?
So talk your doctor about what’s safe for you and be determined to better yourself and your life.
Be determined to be stronger so you are more successful in the daily tasks of life, even ones as simple as carrying in the groceries.
Be determined to boost your mental fortitude so you are better able to overcome the mental challenges of life.
And be determined to look great and feel great about yourself so you stay motivated to keep going and building on the above!
As always, here’s to your health!
